Description

This is an update of an earlier concept drawing I did for the tribe of Nephtali (or also spelled Naphtali). The original drawing is posted here [link]
I created the revised sketch entirely in Sketchbook Pro, then moved it over to Gimp to finish it.
The soldier himself is a Nephtali Longspearman, a footsoldier for the armies of Israel in the era of Moses and Joshua, during the 40 years of wandering through the desert. Scriptures only mentions that Nephtali pulled up the rear in the marching formation, and I expanded on this idea by proposing a concept that they were geared almost as skirmishers, with a long flexible spear used to dismount enemy riders. They are geared in leather, linen, and bronze. I also decided to incorporate some jewelry into the breastplate as the Israelites had taken the wealth of Egypt with them and they most likely had a giant surplus of jems, and the hard jems would stop arrowheads nicely. Plus, it makes nice decoration. His clothing is also designed to operate well in the heat, although, in retrospect, I might have layered more light fabrics to give him better protection from the wind and sun.
